Padinjakkara Annam Palakkadan Unda Matta Rice: Kerala's Heritage Grain on Your Plate
Walk into any traditional Kerala home at lunchtime and you'll likely see a steaming mound of reddish-brown rice beside a bowl of fish curry or sambar. That rice is Matta, and the round, bold-grained Palakkadan Unda Matta is one of its best-loved forms.
A Brief History
Matta rice comes from Palakkad, often called the "rice bowl of Kerala." The district sits beside the Palakkad Gap, a natural break in the Western Ghats that lets monsoon winds and rain reach fertile plains watered by the Bharathapuzha and its tributaries. These conditions have supported paddy farming here for centuries.
The name "Matta" is commonly linked to the rice's red-brown colour. It is made by parboiling the paddy before milling, a traditional method that gives the grain its colour, earthy aroma and firm bite. "Unda" means "round" in Malayalam, which describes the short, plump grains. Palakkadan Matta is also recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, a nod to the link between this region and its rice.
Padinjakkara Annam carries this tradition forward. The rice is milled at Bismillah Rice Mill, where the paddy is traditionally parboiled, polished and naturally aged before it is packed and sent to your kitchen. Aging makes the grains firmer and fluffier when cooked.
Taste and Texture
Unda Matta cooks up fluffy yet slightly chewy, with a mild earthy aroma. It holds its shape well, which is why it pairs so well with spicy fish curry, moru curry, thoran, avial and other Kerala dishes. It also works for kanji (rice porridge), a comfort food across the state.
Health Benefits
Because parboiling happens before milling, and because the rice is only lightly polished, Matta rice keeps more of its nutrients than regular polished white rice.
- Richer in fibre - Fibre aids digestion and keeps you full longer. Padinjakkara Annam Unda Matta lists about 2.2 g of fibre per 100 g.
- Retains minerals and B vitamins - Parboiling pulls some nutrients from the outer layers into the grain, so more survive milling.
- Lower glycaemic response - Parboiled red rice generally raises blood sugar more slowly than polished white rice, which makes it a popular choice for balanced meals.
- Sustained energy - At about 350 kcal and 76 g of carbohydrates per 100 g, it is a wholesome energy source for active days.
- Simple and clean - It is fat-light (about 1.2 g per 100 g), salt-free and sold without preservatives.
Rice is still a carbohydrate-rich food, so portion size matters. If you are managing diabetes or another health condition, check with your doctor or dietitian about how much to eat.
